Quartzites are metamorphic rocks which form over millions of years: they derive from sandstones which are subjected to extremely high temperature and pressure values due to the tectonic movements that cause the sand grains to melt and re-crystallise together with silica. This results in quartzite, an extremely strong and hard stone.
Quartzite is mined in blocks from quarries located in a variety of countries and subsequently cut to create thinner slabs. These are then sanded on one side to obtain a smooth and even surface. At the end of the machining process, a protective coating is applied to the quartzite slab to prevent stains and corrosion, which may be caused by contact with organic acidic substances such as lemon and wine.

Durevolezza: è una pietra nota per la sua durezza e resistenza ed è quindi utilizzata come pavimentazione, rivestimenti o, come nel nostro caso, come piano di lavoro.
Infatti ha una ottima resistenza ai graffi, all’usura e agli urti.
Resistenza alle macchie: essendo poco porosa non è incline all’assorbimento di liquidi e alla formazione di macchie. Un aspetto da tenere decisamente in considerazione poiché ci troviamo in zone della casa continuamente soggette a schizzi e versamenti.
Resistenza al calore: la quarzite è resistente al calore quindi può rivelarsi una buona scelta come top in cucina poiché sopporta molto bene le elevate temperature che si possono creare nella zona adiacente a piani cottura a gas. (Ricordiamo comunque di utilizzare sotto pentola o protezioni adeguate in caso di appoggio di pentole estremante calde.)
Resistenza all’umidità: è un materiale compatto con un basso indice di assorbimento perciò ben si presta ad essere utilizzato nella stanza da bagno perché si riduce il rischio di danni causati proprio dall’umidità.
Resistenza ai prodotti chimici: il piano in quarzite viene trattato superficialmente con prodotti protettivi che bloccano l’aggressione di sostanze acide presenti in cucina o in bagno.
Manutenzione: i piani in quarzite sono relativamente facili da pulire e richiedono una manutenzione minima; non essendo porosi e avendo un trattamento protettivo, si puliscono con prodotti non troppo aggressivi.
Igiene: la quarzite è un materiale igienico perché non essendo poroso non permette la formazione di muffe e batteri.
